In a November interview with www.OffManhattan.com; a guide to carless travel in the tri-state area, The Travel channel's Samantha Brown was asked where she would recommend a weekend without the burden of automotive transport. "Asbury Park...has its own roller derby team; I gave it a whirl in fishnet stockings and discovered my signature move—which gave me my handle 'Green Eggs and Slam'—I had bruises for four months."
The episode, which highlights the many glories of Asbury Park, is scheduled to be a part of season 3 "Samantha Brown's Great Weekends" and will feature The Stone Pony, several of our local businesses and restaurants (Langosta Lounge, Wonder Bar, etc...) and Asbury Park's very own Jersey Shore Roller Girls!
JSRG spent a day of production in Asbury Park Convention Hall, where the roller derby team holds its bouts throughout the year. The track was laid early and skaters arrived to practice drills that would become the source footage for voice overs and b-roll for the episode. Meanwhile camera crews caught league founders and captains discussing the sport of roller derby to Samantha, who would then get suited up in knee pads, elbow pads, helmet, JSRG t-shirt -- the works -- to learn the sport herself. Samantha got a tutorial in skating but was learning the position of blocker and jammer, too. JSRG sent in the skaters for jam after jam with Samantha trying out her newly learned moves in the pack. Rumor has it she even hipchecked JSRG All-Star Chelle Be Evil.
